The Pledge

I am an ethical crafter. I may craft as a hobby, to feed and clothe my family or in the hopes of making my mark or even my fortune. I know any of these reasons is a valid one and worth pursuing. Whatever my reason for crafting, I want to be a respectable member of the community, so I pledge the following:

I will make what I love and love what I make all the while making certain that it’s not illegal, harmful or wasteful. Not knowing what laws, licensing or restrictions apply to my craft and/or business is not an excuse. I will do my research, ask questions and find out everything I need to know.

When applicable, I will craft good relationships within the crafting community because I know that my conduct is important if I want to be a part of it. I don’t have to like everyone (or what they make), but I will remember no one has to like me either. I will treat others the way I want to be treated. I will respect other crafters’ opinions on sharing or protecting supply sources, methods and other information.

If someone else has a great idea, I will praise them. I may be inspired by them. I may even let their work influence me. But I will make sure my copies are for personal use and not profit. If I really can make it better, then I will make it much better, much different and own up to my inspiration, giving credit, whenever possible, to the original maker.

Above all, I pledge to help people who are new to the crafting community become aware of these standards when appropriate and in a gentle manner.

To sign the pledge leave your name, web site and location below in comments. ~JD
